Place a photo inside a ready-made costume for a classroom display. You can prepare the artwork with a placeholder, add a face later, and adjust the photo without changing the original image.

1. Find a costume in Faces
Open Clipart in the tools panel, then select Faces. These assets have a prepared face opening. Ordinary clipart does not gain a face opening when you add it to the board.
Search costumes. Enter a word such as scarecrow and press Enter to run the search.
Narrow the results. Open Filters and choose All or Free. A crown marks premium artwork; access depends on your plan.
Choose a costume card. This opens its face editor before anything is added to your board.

2. Add a placeholder when the photo is not ready
You can arrange the costumes before choosing photos. In the face editor, leave the photo unselected and choose Add placeholder. The silhouette in the opening marks where a face will go. Photo adjustment controls remain disabled until you select a photo.

Later, select the costume and choose Add a face from its selection toolbar. This opens the face editor for that existing element. Finish with Save face to update it.

3. Upload or choose a photo
The face editor has two photo shelves: Student face vault for dedicated face uploads, and My Uploads for images already in your regular Uploads shelf. Use the dedicated upload control for student face photos.
Confirm permission. Check “I have permission to use this student's photo for this board.” Upload a new photo becomes available after you check it.
Choose Upload a new photo. Select a JPEG or PNG file from your device.
Wait for the upload. The new photo is selected in the preview when it is ready. If the editor says it is still processing, try selecting it again in a moment.

To reuse an available photo, select its thumbnail. Selecting another photo resets the draft's photo adjustments, so fit the new face before saving. Use Load more when the shelf offers it.

4. Fit the face inside the opening
Adjust the photo while watching the costume preview. Only the part inside the prepared opening is visible. The costume stays in place while you position the photo behind it.
Control | Use it to |
|---|---|
Drag the photo in the preview | Move the face up, down, left, or right within the opening. |
Zoom | Make the photo larger or smaller inside the opening. Use the slider, value field, or minus and plus buttons. |
Rotation | Straighten a tilted portrait or angle it to suit the costume. |
Flip | Mirror the photo horizontally without flipping the costume. |
Reset | Return the selected photo to its starting zoom, position, rotation, and flip. |
Remove photo | Clear the photo from this draft and restore the placeholder. |

5. Save, resize, and arrange the costume
For a new costume with a photo, choose Add face insert. For an existing costume, choose Save face. Cancel or close leaves the board element unchanged. A photo you already uploaded remains an upload even if you cancel the draft.
Select the added element to move it on the board. In Properties → Basics, set Width (in) or Height (in). Keep Keep ratio enabled to preserve its proportions. Enter a value and leave the field to commit it.

The board's Rotate and Flip controls affect the whole element. Use Edit face when you want to change only the photo. See Select, Arrange, and Manage Elements for general layout controls.
For a coordinated class set, duplicate an insert and edit each copy's photo. Duplicate also copies the current face, so replace or remove it before treating the copy as another student's costume. Face Inserts are edited individually.
6. Replace or remove a face photo
Select a completed insert and choose Edit face. Pick a different photo, adjust it, and choose Save face. The costume stays on the board.
To return an insert to a placeholder, choose Remove photo from the selection toolbar. You can also choose Remove photo inside the face editor, then Save face. Removing the photo in the dialog is only a draft change until you save it.

Removing a photo from one insert does not delete the uploaded file. To remove a dedicated photo from the vault itself, select its vault thumbnail and choose Delete selected photo from vault. Review the confirmation carefully: photos still used by private boards remain in those boards. Vault removal is not a way to clear every existing use of a photo.
7. Understand photo privacy and sharing
The Student face vault is intended to keep dedicated face photos separate from the regular Uploads shelf. The permission checkbox helps you confirm the photo is appropriate to use before uploading it.
Where the artwork goes | What happens to the face |
|---|---|
Your private board | The saved Face Insert retains its photo and fitting adjustments. |
A cloneable template | Face Insert photos and their adjustments are removed from the template copy, leaving the costume with a placeholder. Your source board keeps its photo. |
A downloaded image or print export | The visible face is part of the exported artwork. Review it before distributing the file or printout. |
An ordinary image element | A photo placed directly on the board is not a Face Insert photo and is not removed by the Face Insert template safeguard. |
The template safeguard also handles Face Inserts nested inside groups and repeating elements. It does not remove faces from files you have already downloaded or screenshots you take yourself.
8. Check the result before exporting
Inspect each insert closely for clipped foreheads, missing chins, photo edges, and an incorrect photo on a duplicate. Reopen Edit face to correct the crop. If the photo is blurry, replace it with a clearer original rather than repeatedly increasing Zoom.
Set the physical costume size before exporting and check that the board is saved. Use Which BoardCraft Export Should I Use? to choose an output. For classroom assembly, check a test print at the intended size before printing the whole set.
